Diamonds

Diamonds, while not indestructible, are the hardest gem of all. They are the hardest material on earth, 58 times harder than anything else in nature. The only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond.

Diamonds are made of just one element: carbon. They form under high temperature and pressure conditions that exist only about 100 miles beneath the earth’s surface. These conditions also determine the unique look of each diamond. Most diamonds are over a billion years old.
