Jewelry Makers Market: Meet Benira Sutphin

Benira Sutphin is a women with many titles: Wife, Mom, Mimi (grandmother), Friend and Jewelry artist. My husband’s job made it possible to move to Columbia, S.C. in August of 1997 from Texas where I lived for most of my life. I didn’t think I would want to live any where else but Texas, but I was wrong. I fell in love with everything about the south, except the humidity. Soon after we settled in our new home I joined a few art groups and took a part time job at a local bead store. And like they say in the movies, “The rest is history”.

I have taken several classes at area art schools like William Holland Lapidary School in Young Harris, G.A. and John C. Campbell Folk Art school in Brass town N.C., and also have taken classes in Atlanta, G.A. and Raleigh, N.C. I teach classes at the bead store I once worked at and also for Columbia Gem and Mineral Group here in Columbia, S.C. I have a studio in Camden, S.C. and also a small area in my husband’s man cave (a.k.a. his work shop). Most of my art is one of a kind but I try to do pieces with a local theme. I enjoy seeing my Art worn by people who love the item as much as I loved making it. It means I can go on to a new piece and we are both happy that way.
